Gadgets and Technologies to Expect in 2014

Moore's law makes it seem harder and harder each year to quell the excitement of what new technologies the next year will bring. I remember being in high school, amazed when a teacher told me that 95% of the population in Sweden had cell phones at the time. (Nokia was a leader in new technology) Now it seems like cell phones go obsolete faster than PC's did in the 90's.

2015 is going to bring in a slew of new technology and fun new gadgets for us to play with. And yes folks, we are finally going to get our hands on the first mass produced, made for your living room virtual reality games!

Playstation 4 "Orbis"

While Sony remains silent about their next-gen system, a certain developer (who has a reputation for providing solid, accurate information) has taken a different route. To many, the new technology contained in the PS3 represented a direct relationship between gaming and other multimedia experiences. The PS4 should follow this trend and may become a central media hub for many of it's users.

Some expect a release as early as Christmas 2013, but that isn't too likely. You can probably expect this new technology to be released in the Spring of 2014.

Ubuntu OS Smartphones

For the less tech-savvy, "Ubuntu" may sound like something an African tribal dance. For the rest of us, it stands as a strong, secure, open source alternative to the Windows OS. As a matter of fact, I am using Ubuntu on my laptop as I write this very article.

While it is debatable whether or not a current operating system injected into a smartphone can be considered "new technology", there is no doubt that it will bring a slew of new features and options for smartphone users in 2014.

The official announcement from Canonical, the company behind the linux-based operating system, states that they are hoping to achieve a unified experience on TV's, PC's, and smartphones. At the very least, this new technology will hopefully allow me to play some Battle for Wesnoth on my phone in 2014.

Apple iWatch

And here it is, the first huge innovation from Apple since the loss of Steve Jobs. I have never been a fan of Apple products (though I respect their contributions to the world of technology) but I would be a dirty liar if I said this one didn't have me excited.

There are a hundred and one rumors about this future gadget, but none of them really matter. What matters is the concept itself. Allow me to explain.

  • Apple created the iPod. (Remember your old Discman?)
  • Apple created the iPhone. (Where is your Palm Pilot and Garmin unit now?)
  • Apple created the iPad. (Laptop sales are already declining)

Get my drift? Apple participates in a form of "creative destruction" whenever they develop new technology. You may think smartphones haven't even reached their full potential yet, but dashboard GPS units were still in their infancy when the smartphone sent them the way of the 8 track.

It may be a way out before it happens, but new technology like the iWatch may be putting a swift end to the smartphone era.

Tobii REX - Eye-Controlled PC's

Ok, so the REX is a new technology that we can probably expect to see before 2014, but Tobii only plans to release 5,000 of their new peripherals to the public this year. However, they plan to begin laptop integration of the units in 2014 which certainly qualifies for this list.

By now, you are probably wondering what this mystery peripheral is.

The Tobii Rex is a new technology designed to work with the Windows 8 platform, allowing you to toss out the mouse and allow your eyes to do the work for you. This new technology is only a natural evolution, since your eyes are always going to be looking where you plan to click anyway. If you have a laptop such as mine, where the left and right mouse buttons are placed just below the space bar, you may see this as a godsend.

I hate the built in mouse (I use a wireless instead), but I think I love the Tobii REX.

This new technology will eliminate the need to remove your hands from the keyboard just to click something. Click and drag? More like "Click and scan". How well will this new technology work? I guess we'll find out in 2014.

Google Glass

Ok ok. So last year, I said that this new technology from Google would be coming out this year. On the bright side, I wasn't completely wrong. Developer models will in fact be shipped out this year. Bad news is, that means we have a little longer to wait.

While there is a lot of confidence in a 2014 release date (especially knowing developers will have their hands on it soon) everything else is just speculation at this point. With a new technology like this, we are left to rumors and imagination until we have the product in our hands...or on our faces, in this case.

What we can expect is a whole new era in information exchange. It is likely that this technology will be able to display any information our current Android phones can display, which should help with product research, navigation, and fantasy football.

Food for thought? Google Glass + iWatch.

2014 will be a hell of a year.

What new technology are you looking forward to the most?
